The Sieman's We Can Change The World Challenge is a fantastic contest for grades K-8 where small groups of students identify an environmental problem in their own classroom, school or community, work to find a solution and then share it with the world. The site has so many wonderful resources (videos, lesson plans, eBooks and more) that even if you decide not to join the challenge, you'll still find many of the resources extremely useful in your science classrooms. I particularly like the virtual labs.
Here I take about 8 minutes to give you a tour of the Sieman's We Can Change The World Challenge. Here's to us all becoming "Agents of Change!"

An Augmented Reality Valentine's Day

My husband and son each bought me Valentine's cards today that used the new Augmented Reality technology. On the surface it reads just like a regular card. On the front, "When you've been married as long as we have, you learn to accept the other person's faults." On the inside, "You'll understand this if I ever develop some. Happy Valentine's Day" (Perfect from my husband!)
Then if you look on the inside cover, it says,
"Watch this card come to life on your computer!" 1. Keep this card and go to www.hallmark.com/extra 2. Follow instructions online WEBCAM REQUIRED TO VIEW SURPRISE
An 80MB file downloaded (Mac) and then found my webcam automatically. All I did was hold the front of the card up to the webcam and an animated story came to life. There were three different scenes I discovered by chance, as I moved the card ever so slightly.
If you weren't lucky enough to get one of these for Valentine's Day, go get one for yourself!
Oh, and I got some beautiful flowers, too. :)
